2009 Junior Golf Program
Junior Golf Program
Thank you for showing interest in our new and improved Junior Golf program. We are pleased to continue our ongoing relationship with juniorlinks.com, a new website designed for kids, parents, and golf professionals who run junior development programs around the country. For those not familiar with our junior golf program, here is a little history- Our program can be linked back to the legendary Joe Kirkwood, Stowe's first head professional.
Joe was a renowned golf professional from Australia who, besides winning dozens of professional titles, became famous for his trick shots and his love for teaching. Lowell Thomas referred to Joe when he said, “He did more for the advancement of the game than any other golfer in history." In his memory, the Joe Kirkwood Memorial Golf Tournament is held each summer in June to raise funds for our program. Our program has introduced over 3,000 juniors from the surrounding communities to the game of golf.
Program Specifics
Our 2009 program will be very similar from that of 2008. The sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-11 AM starting July 7th - August 6th. Each junior golfer will receive over 20 hours of supervised golf instruction. The program is for children ages 6-14. The cost for the six-week session is $150. Each child will enjoy our program ending tournament followed by awards and a pizza party. The maximum number of children for the program is 60 and enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis. If you have any questions regarding the program please do not hesitate to call Dan Lehmann @ 802.253.4893 or email at dlehmann@stowe.com.
Program Objective
Our goal is to grow the game of golf by introducing the local youth to the game in a fun and creative learning environment. We will strive to highlight the relationship of playing the game of golf to each individual's personal development. Specifically, golf offers the opportunity to teach lessons in integrity, honesty, sportsmanship, as well as learning about tradition and honoring the rules of the game.
Golf is the most over taught sport in the world. Our program will not focus on highly specific skills, or details; we want to give a good introduction, model the correct techniques, and let the kids simply have fun. Skill refinement will come with age.
Equipment
Proper fitting equipment is an important part of learning the game. We have equipment for sale (US Kids Clubs) and are available to help fit your child. We will also have a limited number of sets to use during the class. They are available on a first come first serve basis each morning.
Safety
Whenever you gather a pack of kids, give them weighted metal sticks, and encourage them to swing them, you are asking for trouble. We take extreme caution when setting up our program. We use designated hitting zones and safety zones that are painted on the ground to help enforce our safety first policy. It is extremely important that the children know, understand, and appreciate the risks of the game. Serious injury can occur if a club or ball strikes someone.
Volunteering
Many hands make light work. Those who volunteer will receive special incentive pricing for the programs. The price will drop from $150 to $100. Please contact Dan Lehmann at the Stowe Country Club to inquire about volunteering.
- Volunteer for 12 hours of supervising during this program.
