Mountain Chapel
Throughout recorded history, mountains have been special places where people have felt closer to God: Abraham on Mt. Moriah; Moses on Mt. Sinai; Elijah on Mt. Carmel; Peter, James and John with Jesus on the Mount of the Transfiguration. These are a few examples.
On the highest mountain in Vermont, there is a place where one can experience that closeness to God. So that everyone may feel at home in this chapel, symbols of any particular religion have been omitted.
The Mountain Chapel is located about halfway up on the Mt. Mansfield Toll Road, near the juncture of several ski and hiking trails. It can be reached by automobile and foot in the warm weather months and by skis or snowboard in the winter. The chapel is available for weddings, memorial services and other events, as well as for public worship and private devotions.
A simple service of praise and prayer is held every Sunday at 2 pm, weather permitting. The Toll Road is closed for periods of time during the spring and autumn, and at those times services are not held.
The ministry of The Mountain Chapel is offered by volunteer chaplains in our 28-seat, no utilities, stone Chapel. Persons desiring special ministries, such as weddings and memorial services, are invited to contact one of the following:
